Golden Years Foundation Celebrates the International Day for Older People with a Series of Activities

In honor of International Day for Older People, the Golden Years Foundation hosted a series of activities aimed at enriching the lives of elderly Egyptians. These events highlight the foundation’s commitment to improving the quality of life for seniors through a diverse range of cultural, social, and health-oriented activities. This year’s events are held in conjunction with the recent issuance of Law No. 19 of 2024, which guarantees comprehensive rights and protections for the elderly.

“International Elderly Day offers us a chance to reflect on our ongoing commitment to enriching the lives of the elderly. At Golden Years, we strive to create an inclusive environment where seniors feel both supported and empowered to lead active, healthy and meaningful lives. Our diverse range of virtual and in-person activities—including book clubs, the Golden Years choir, craft bazaars, excursions, and wellness workshops—demonstrates our continuous efforts to combat isolation and provide over 70,000 members with opportunities to connect, learn, and thrive.” said Dina Hashish, founder of the Golden Years Foundation.

The Golden Years Foundation aims to raise awareness about healthy aging and improve seniors’ quality of life. It focuses on sharing knowledge, empowering families and caregivers, and integrating seniors into society through digital literacy and access to essential services. The foundation also fosters intergenerational communication by involving students, employees, and elderly volunteers in its activities.

GYF’s efforts that started in 2021 align with the Egyptian government’s vision to support the elderly, who have reached 9.3 million, representing 8.8% of the total population in 2024, with an anticipation to reach 22 million by 2050. It’s worth noting that President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi recently ratified Law No. 19 of 2024 that has introduced several measures to ease the lives of the elderly, including exemptions on public transportation fees, partial waivers for sports, cultural, and museum memberships, and tax exemptions for institutions caring for seniors.
