So you're getting your first tatoo

Whether you just turned 18 and want to celebrate your birthday by legally getting a badass tattoo or have recently fallen in love with the art of ink, we got your back. Getting a permanent piece of art tattooed to your skin is a big decision, so you have to make sure you take the necessary steps to avoid abject regret and throwing your money down the toilet.

TRUST THE ARTIST

There’s no such thing as having unrealistic expectations when it comes to what you want your tattoo to look like as long as you visit a trusted certified parlour. You should make sure you tell your tattooist exactly what you want without leaving out a single detail. However, if the artist advises otherwise, you should never take their words for granted. Valuing their suggestions is unlikely to disappoint you as your tattoo is basically advertisement of their work.

CUSTOM MADE TATTOOS ARE BEST

As much as it’s tempting to copy other people’s work from the internet, you’ll probably end up hating your permanently injected portrait when you find out how many others had it done, making you just a string in many. Custom made tattoos are more expensive, but they will guarantee that you’ll be the only one walking around with your chosen piece of art.

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR

If the artist has offered you a piece for an unexpectedly cheap price, you best be sure it’s going to look as good as it costs. Remember that tattoos are something that will be on your body for the rest of your life, so your best bet is to pay more for better quality than less for something you would be embarrassed of for the rest of your life.

THE PROCESS IS PAINFUL

There’s no other way around it. The process itself is literally having an electric pen penetrate the surface of your skin. Some parts of your skin will be more sensitive than others; some areas will bleed while others will have you grit your teeth until they hurt.

ABANDON SUNLIGHT

One downside to being inked and fabulous is having to avoid sunlight as much as you possibly can. Ultraviolet rays cause your dark melanin layers to elevate to the surface of your skin to protect it from being burnt, and thus fades ink in the process. Aftercare tips from your artist are essential, but you will inevitably have to get touchups some time in the future.

IT’S OKAY TO FREAK OUT

Almost everyone gets a bit anxious after witnessing their first tattoo. Your body was a clean slate that you have only just started decorating, so it’s okay if you sometimes don’t recognize yourself as well as you’re used to. You should be aware that you’re least likely going to regret your decision as long as you love the design you chose.
